About us
VCDP is well anchored in Nigeria government’s vision for agricultural transformation through commodity value chain approach, with emphasis on enhancing productivity and access to markets for rice and cassava smallholder farmers.

The Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) is a Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) programme that focuses on supporting cassava and rice value chains for small farmers in the six states of Anambra, Benue, Ebonyi, Niger, Ogun and Taraba while also addressing the constraints along the value chains.

In Benue State Guma, Logo, Okpokwu, Gwer-East and Ogbadibo are privileged to be selected for the intervention while Katsina-Ala, Kwande, Buruku, Otukpo and Oju are included as VCDP outreach local Governments with Gwer-West as a VCDP Model Local Government.

With an estimated 70% of the total population of Nigeria living in rural areas, agriculture is a mainstay of economic activity. Also, about 70% of the total farming population is composed of smallholder farmers, cultivating less than 5 ha and producing up to 90% of the total national output. Poverty remains largely a rural phenomenon, with two-thirds of the rural population considered poor. The livelihood of smallholder farmers has been constrained by a host of challenges: low productivity; paucity of opportunities for value addition; environmental degradation; limited access to productive assets and inputs; inadequate support services (extension and research); limited access to rural financial services; inadequate market and rural infrastructure (including water supply); post-harvest losses and a constrained enabling environment.

To address these challenges, the Government of Nigeria and IFAD contrived the VCDP, adopting the value chain approach, to enhance productivity increases, promotion of agro-processing, access to markets and opportunities to facilitate improved engagement of the private sector, and farmers’ organizations themselves, in the development effort.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP)  on Thursday trained Benue Farmers on Operation, Maintenance and repair of cassava planter, cassava up rooter and boom sprayer at Aliade in Gwer-East LGA in conjunction with the National Center for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM).
The training, held at the VCDP Ashina land development site involved farmers cut across the 5no VCDP intervention LGAs in the state – Guma, Gwer-East, Logo, Ogbadibo and Okpokwu LGAs was aimed at exposing the farmers to Agricultural Mechanization as a means of improving quality and quantity of yield as well as reducing drudgery.
At the opening ceremony, the Benue State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, represented the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Clement Tondo said the training was just one of the many strategies aimed at positioning Benue Farmers in the front role of Agricultural Mechanization. “The training is expected to expose the farmers to handling and maintenance of tractors, so they become familiar as well as understand the advantages of adopting 100% mechanized farming”
He said the Governor Ortom has created the enabling environment for VCDP to intervene, support and train Benue Farmers on Good Agronomic Practices (GAP) for Rice and Cassava Farmers as well as enjoined farmers to take the programme seriously as many of such support and trainings have been planned.
Reacting, the Benue State IFAD-VCDP Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Igbaukum said the series of trainings are aimed at exposing and empowering the Benue Farmer towards quality production of Rice and Cassava Crops for economic improvement and the overall goal of self-support, sustenance and the overall goal of poverty reduction.
He further encouraged farmers to register with the programme in the state and enjoy the benefits of the intervention which, he promised will build business farmers and entrepreneurs.
